Martha was a woman who loved to be around Jesus. She even invited him into her home and made it her goal to serve him. Her sister Mary simply sat at Jesus' feet and listened to him. This upset Martha because it left her alone to do all the serving. But when Martha asked Jesus to correct Mary, Jesus actually says that Mary is the one who chose "what is better" and he was not going to take that away from her.
Our lives are very busy - even at times with good things. We might even like being around Jesus alot, but are we sitting at His feet and listening to Him? If not, then we have chosen poorly. Consider the following statistics from Barna Research Group:
- Those who consider themselves Christians spend 7x as much time on entertainment than they do on spiritual activities.
- In a list of 21 life goals, those who consider themselves Christians ranked "having a close relationship with God" 6th, trailing such things as "having a successful career", "living a comfortable lifestyle", and "having a satisfying family life."
What about you? Are you choosing "what is better?" Are you giving Jesus your undivided attention and learning from Him? Or is he being squeezed out by "more important" matters? Nothing and no one will give you peace and hope in your soul like Jesus will if you will sit at his feet and listen to Him. I pray we all make it a point today to choose "what is better."
